Board of Education

St. Joseph Board of Education is the policy making legal body that represents parish educational programs.

Policy Development

  • Makes policies for the local educational program in accord with Archdiocesan policies and in consultation with the local administration relative to planning, operation, and maintenance of facilities and equipment;
  • Assumes responsibility for the implementation of Archdiocesan educational policy; and;
  • Establishes a salary schedule and the qualifications for hiring personnel.

Leadership

  • Keeps informed and actively involved in educational issues;
  • Accepts responsibility and leadership for total Catholic education.

Planning

  • Establishes and/or approves guidelines outlining the responsibilities of administrators of the educational program in accord with Archdiocesan policies;
  • Develops a catechetical plan which provides opportunities to encounter the Gospel message for the total parish: adults, elderly, young adults, adolescents, children of catechetical age, Catholic schools, early childhood, family, persons with disabilities, and the marginalized (ABE 6141);
  • Approves a budget submitted by administrators which is consistent with established goals and directions (ABE 3100).

Coordination

  • Coordinates the educational activities of the parish(es);
  • Supports administrators in carrying out educational policies and programs;
  • Serves as liaison with public agencies and authorities;
  • Supports the legislative initiatives of the Iowa Catholic Conference and the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops.

Communication

  • Promotes understanding and support of Catholic education in the local community;
  • Reports to persons/groups (e.g., parish council) while maintaining necessary confidences (e.g., executive session);
  • Hears parents/parishioners and involves them appropriately as partners in planning and educating, conducting polls and surveys when necessary, according to Archdiocesan policy.

Evaluation

  • Focuses on the attainment of the goals and objectives of the educational program;
  • Reviews the administration of the educational program;
  • Causes educational programs to be evaluated periodically;
  • Monitors the educational program so it operates within the approved budget.

The Board of Education meets the second Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m. in the library for its regular meeting. All are welcome to attend. Board members are elected in the spring for three-year terms. Those interested in running for election are encouraged to do so and should meet with the school principal or pastor.
